The Chameleons + Decline And Fall - RCA, Lisboa,18.Jun.2025 - Uma noite muito calorosa / A night of warmth

Confesso que não consegui preparar este concerto. Geralmente tento procurar a música das bandas que não conheço, mas meteu-se uma coisa e outra coisa, e esqueci-me. Ainda por cima sou daquelas pessoas que não conseguem avaliar música nova à primeira audição, que foi efectivamente o que aconteceu no concerto. O que consigo perceber imediatamente é se o tipo de som me interessa, e de facto interessou.
Por isso fiz batota. Cheguei a casa e fui ouvir o Bandcamp desta banda de Lisboa. Os Decline And Fall fazem um post-punk/darkwave contido, sombrio e melancólico, por vezes algo ambiental, não exactamente dirigido às pistas de dança. A sonoridade merece ser descoberta aqui:

The Chameleons
Os Chameleons arrancaram às 21h30 com o poderoso "Mad Jack". Estava uma noite quente, daquele calor húmido e abafado que se pega à pele. O concerto estava esgotado e o RCA estava cheio. Mark Burgess apresentou-se só com um colete, e pela segunda canção já todos em palco transpiravam, e nós também. A esta hora ainda deviam estar mais de 20 graus na rua depois de um dia que chegou quase aos 40. Mais tarde, de madrugada, haveria chuva e trovoada. Apesar do ambiente tropical, ninguém esmoreceu, na medida do possível.
O público sabia ao que vinha e foi sempre entusiástico. Os Chameleons não desapontaram. Mark Burgess está em forma e a voz continua excelente. Tivemos hits atrás de hits como "The Fan And The Bellows", "Up The Down Escalator", "Soul In Isolation", "Swamp Thing" (a canção que teve mais coro do público), "In Shreds", "Monkeyland", "Second Skin", "Don't Fall", todos clássicos tocados com arranjos diferentes, como se espera ao vivo. A canção mais recente, "Saviours Are A Dangerous Thing", do novo álbum a ser lançado em Setembro, chegou no encore.
Ainda bem que não preparei este concerto, por exemplo, assistindo a YouTubes de concertos recentes. Durante "Soul In Isolation", Mark Burgess incluiu letras de outras canções, numa espécie de medley, como "For What It's Worth" de Buffalo Springfield, "Eleanor Rigby" dos Beatles e "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" dos Smiths. Foi uma surpresa, como eu gosto, sem spoilers!
Mark Burgress esteve igual a si próprio, carismático, simpático, efusivo e brincalhão, sempre a manifestar apreço pelo público, mas o fim eu não esperava. Ser simpático e agradecer é uma coisa, vir para o meio do maralhal, com aquele calor, toda a gente a transpirar, cantar "Rebel Rebel" de David Bowie como recheio de "Don't Fall", é mesmo de punk à antiga. Ninguém pode ter saído do RCA desiludido.
Da primeira vez que vi os Chameleons, versão Chameleons Vox, no Santiago Alquimista em 2010, fui para lá "arrastada" por amigos sem saber que gostava tanto dos Chameleons como de facto gostava. Saí de lá uma fã. Desta vez já entrei fã e saí ainda mais fã. Quanto mais conheço, mais gosto. Tem sido uma relação saudável de apreço e confiança construída ao longo dos anos, ao contrário da minha relação tóxica com determinada banda que não vai ser mencionada.
Deixo apenas uma pergunta: temos mesmo a certeza de que os Chameleons não conseguiriam encher os Coliseus? Tanto o RCA como o Santiago Alquimista são salas para uma banda de menor dimensão, já para não contar com o Rock Rendez Vous em 1983 onde iam as bandas novas e desconhecidas. Mas actualmente os Chameleons são uma banda de culto. Não mereciam os Coliseus? Ou será que hoje em dia os preços dos bilhetes num Coliseu o tornam proibitivo? Sinceramente, não sei. Custa-me não ver os Chameleons no Coliseu.

I confess that I wasn't able to prepare this concert. Usually I try to look up the bands I don't know, but there came one thing after another, and I forgot. On top of that, I'm the kind of person that is incapable of properly evaluating new music on a first listen, which was the case. What I can tell immediately is whether the music interests me, and in fact it did.
So I cheated. I came home and listened to their Bandcamp. Decline And Fall, a band from Lisbon, make a restrained, sombre and melancholy post-punk/darkwave, somewhat into ambient at times, not exactly directed at the dance floor. Their sound deserves to be discovered here:

The Chameleons
The Chameleons started at 9.30pm with the powerful "Mad Jack". It was a hot night, with that kind of humid and stifled heat that sticks to one's skin. The concert was sold out and the RCA was full. Mark Burgess came on stage wearing only a vest, and by the time of the second song everyone on stage was sweating, and so were we. At this hour the temperature was still over 20ºC outside after reaching almost 40ºC during the day. Later, at dawn, there would be rain and thunder. Despite the tropical conditions, everyone stood firm, as much as possible.
The audience knew what they had come for and was enthusiastic from the first moment. The Chameleons did not disappoint. Mark Burgess is in shape and his voice remains excellent. We had hits after hits like "The Fan And The Bellows", "Up The Down Escalator", "Soul In Isolation", "Swamp Thing" (the moment the audience sang louder),"In Shreds", "Monkeyland", "Second Skin", "Don't Fall", all classics played with different arrangements, as expected. The most recent song, "Saviours Are A Dangerous Thing", from the new album due in September, was played during the encore.
I'm glad I did not prepare this concert, as in watching YouTubes of recent gigs. During "Soul In Isolation", Mark Burgess included lyrics from other songs, in a kind of medley, "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield, "Eleanor Rigby" by The Beatles and "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" by The Smiths. It was a surprise, just the way I like it, no spoilers!
Mark Burgess was his usual self, charismatic, friendly, effusive and playful, always expressing his appreciation for the audience, but I had not foreseen the ending. Being nice and appreciative is one ting, stepping into the midst of the crowd, in that heat, everybody dripping, to sing David Bowie's "Rebel Rebel" in the middle of "Don't Fall", that's old school punk. No one could have felt disappointed as they left the RCA.
The first time I saw The Chameleons, as Chameleons Vox, at Santiago Alquimista in 2010, I was "dragged" there by friends, not knowing I liked The Chameleons as much as I actually did. I left there a fan. This time I arrived a fan and left a bigger fan. The more I know them the more I like them. It's been a healthy relationship of appreciation and trust built over the years, unlike my toxic relationship with a certain band that shall not be named.
I end with a question: are we really sure The Chameleons would not fill the Coliseus? Both RCA and Santiago Alquimista are smaller band venues, not counting Rock Rendez Vous in 1983, where new and unknown bands came to play. But nowadays The Chameleons are a cult band. Wouldn't they deserve the Coliseus? Or is it that nowadays the ticket prices in Coliseu make it undoable? Honestly, I don't know. I regret that The Chameleons don't play at the Coliseu.
